Adductor Minimus

The adductor minimus is not always described as a separate muscle but represents the uppermost, most superior fibres of the adductor magnus in the medial compartment of the thigh. It arises from the inferior ramus of the pubis and passes almost horizontally to insert on the medial lip of the linea aspera and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur. Sharing the actions of the magnus fibres it belongs to, it adducts and laterally rotates the thigh. It is supplied by the obturator nerve (L2, L3, L4), consistent with its origin as part of the adductor group.

The Adductor Minimus is defined first by where it attaches. Its origin is the more fixed anchor, usually the proximal or more stable end that stays put during contraction, while its insertion is the more mobile point that is pulled toward the origin when the muscle shortens.

Action & function

When the Adductor Minimus contracts, it produces the following movement: Adducts and laterally rotates the thigh.

As part of the Thigh group of the Lower Limb, it works alongside neighbouring muscles to generate smooth, coordinated movement and to stabilise the structures it acts on.

Nerve supply & clinical relevance

The Adductor Minimus receives its nerve supply from the Obturator nerve (L2–L4). This nerve carries fibres from spinal segment(s) L2, L4.

Because a muscle can only contract when its nerve is intact, injury to the Obturator nerve or to its spinal roots (L2, L4) can weaken or paralyse the Adductor Minimus, impairing the movements it normally produces (adducts and laterally rotates the thigh). This is why knowing the innervation is central to localising nerve lesions in clinical practice.

How to study the Adductor Minimus (the OIANS method)

Learn the adductor minimus as the top slice of the adductor magnus rather than a wholly independent muscle. Because its fibres run more horizontally than the rest of the magnus, from the pubic ramus to the upper linea aspera, it is well placed to adduct and laterally rotate the thigh, which is why it is grouped with the adductors of the medial compartment.

Fix its nerve and origin by its parent muscle: like the adductor portion of the magnus, it is supplied by the obturator nerve (L2, L3, L4). Keeping it mentally attached to the adductor magnus, and recalling that only the lower hamstring part of magnus takes the sciatic nerve, prevents confusion about which fibres carry which innervation.
