Inferior Pharyngeal Constrictor (Thyropharyngeal Part)

The thyropharyngeal part is the upper, obliquely fibred component of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor. It arises from the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage and sweeps backward and upward to meet its fellow at the median pharyngeal raphe, overlapping the middle constrictor above it like the tiles of a roof. Along with the rest of the pharyngeal constrictors it narrows the lumen of the pharynx to drive the food bolus downward during the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. It is supplied by the vagus nerve (CN X) through the pharyngeal plexus, with an additional contribution from the external laryngeal nerve. The gap between its oblique fibres and the more horizontal cricopharyngeal fibres below is Killian's dehiscence, the weak point where a pharyngeal (Zenker) diverticulum tends to form.
